When we are not batteling the never ending cold/ear and eye infections we like to go out for playtime. Being the bargenista that I am I keep my eyes out all the time for special deals on indoor play places because for me McD playplace doesn’t fly, it’s just too dirty. I frequent living social, groupons and local sites with deals.
So today we where at this awesome place My Urban Toddler, it’s an indoor play area for kids under 5. The thing I always find so unusual about this play area is all the parents swarm.
*Swarm means hanging out within 3 foot distance of their kids at all times, often interjecting how the children interact with each other and with their enviroment.
This is one of my biggest pet peves of watching others parent. I watched today this mother with her probably 2 year old daughter. She wouldn’t just let this little girl play at all, everytime she put her down she was telling her what to touch and play with. Then when she wanted to play a little out of the mom’s idea. The mom would swarm in, pick her up and repremand her. This went on for about 30 until both mom and child where exassperated, had a tantrem and left.
No fun in that.
My personal loose rules for play area interaction are:
1. Stay back, you child should be close enough to get you attention but don’t go crazy 10 feet or more is fine.
2. Unless your child id breaking toys or hurting themselves or others don’t tell them how to play.
3. Let todlers work it out themselves, only interject to stop a fight.
4. Most important is HAVE FUN! These are your and your families memories enjoy them.
